Prayer MinistriesCreate in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. Cast me not away from thy presence, and take not thy Holy Spirit from me. Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation, and uphold me with a willing spirit. Psalm 51:10-12
PRAYER CHAIN
The Prayer Chain is our oldest prayer ministry in our church, and there have been many many wonderful times of answered prayer experienced by this group. They are motivated by two similar verses found in Psalm 14:2 and 53:2, which say, “God looked down from heaven upon the children of men, to see if there were any that did understand, that did seek God.” They are governed by a set of guidelines which help to remind them of their need for dedication and serious concern about praying for others. The Prayer Chain may be activated by calling Becky Stewart at the Church Office—286-6638.
E-MAIL PRAYER MINISTRY
Many have left the Prayer Chain to participate in the e-mail prayer ministry which receives prayer requests instantly as they are needed. They share in all the prayer needs that are activated on the Prayer Chain. There are a total of more than 30 members of this ministry including the coordinator, Becky Stewart. This ministry has been a vital resource to pray for urgent needs as well as ongoing supplications which the LORD richly blesses. To submit a prayer request, please email Becky Stewart at beckystewart@bellsouth.net.
CIRCLE OF PRAYER
The Circle of Prayer began in February, 1994. Its specific function is to receive prayer requests from the congregation after the worship service each Sunday morning. Cards are available in the pews and may be placed in the offering plate during the service. Cards for mailing are signed after the short prayer in the chapel for that Sunday, and these are mailed the next day. The group coordinator is Becky Stewart.
PRAYER LINES
Prayer Lines began in the hearts of several members more than a year before the actual start-up in 1996. Our “upper room” is located just over the ante-room east of the sanctuary, and a schedule is maintained by members who come to pray for their designated hour each week. There are seven stations located in the upper room that give on-going information pertaining to “Crisis”, “Social”, “Mission”, “Salvation”, “Church”, “Elderly”, and “Youth”. Cindy Vann leads this group. Anyone wanting prayer may dial 287-2470 to leave a message for Prayer Lines, and the upper room is open to anyone who would like to come and pray.
PRAYER ANGELS
Prayer Angels is a ministry formed six years ago to provide prayer support by the young people of our congregation to older members. It is headed by Katie Drewry and Kim Pratt and is made up of children and young people who are each assigned to pray for an older person. Richard Milam assists in obtaining names and information about the elderly, and Brett and Kimberly Grantham assist with the children. This effort provides opportunities for young children to learn about prayer while encouraging unique and lasting friendships.
PRAYER WARRIORS
Prayer Warriors, headed by Susanne Cooper and Deborah Kiddy, was begun in 1993, and is an effective effort for our children. There are about 90 members who are assigned and pray for all children of FPC. The effort is equally enjoyable to the children as well as adult members. Unique friendships have developed, and the effective prayer support of our children is valuable to the future of this church and the work of the Lord.
NATIONAL DAY OF PRAYER
First Presbyterian Church has been sponsoring the National Day of Prayer since 1992. All Christians in the community are encouraged to meet together at our local County Courthouse on the first Thursday in May. This ministry has grown to the extent that other churches and individuals in the community participate in music, worship, and prayer on that day. An effort to have leaders in other churches to rotate turns for leadership is being made and has been successful thus far.
PRAYER MINISTRY TEAM
The Prayer Ministry Team, led by our Pastor Don Elliott, meets regularly every other month for one hour just before the meeting of committees on Committee Night. Members of this team are Susanne Cooper, Katie Drewry, Brett Grantham, Kimberly Grantham, Annelle Grier, Jeanie Hufstedler, Deborah Kiddy, Velma Long, Richard Milam, Sherri Shipp, Becky Stewart, Cindy Vann, and Debbie Worsham. The Prayer Ministry Team oversees all prayer efforts at First Presbyterian Church including various other short term prayer needs.
